It was supposed to be a quiet Easter. We had already done the Easter egg hunt and the wife was supposed to be at work. How quickly things change. If you've been following, you know that Keith and Kathie were in a motorcycle accident and Kathie was scheduled for surgery today. The surgery got delayed and she hadn't eaten and was understandably hungry and nauseous. I never heard back about her surgery but I trust all went well.
The parents wanted to have an Easter egg hunt... So it started. A visit from one set of grandparents and we were off to the other set's house for the egg hunt. That's where it got weird. No, it wasn't the family... that's always weird.
You see, we got done with the hunt and the guys gathered a handful of the 'broken' eggs for some outdoor fun with a 3 man water balloon launcher. As we ran outside we noticed that police cars and a fire truck were gathering next door. The people came running out of the house and into the barn. That's when it got really bad. The family members were visibly upset and the swarm of police and medics quickly entered then slowly exited the barn. That was followed by an officer closing the door while others took copious notes. A quick search on Indy 911 Calls revealed a police run for a suicidal person followed about 3 minutes later for a medical run for cardiac arrest. It was pretty clear at that point based on the demeanor of the family and emergency responders that someone had unfortunately been successful. That's a sad occurrence and especially bad when it happens on Easter. A somber tone fell across our group as others started coming to the same realization. At the end of the afternoon we said our good-byes and headed out to our next stop. As went down the driveway it was busy next door with investigators scurrying around and the ominous unmarked black van sitting quietly in the driveway as if to reinforce the morbid outcome. Even though I don't know you, may God grant you the strength you need.
Friggin' weird day. It's odd how death can cast such a heavy net that it brings down others nearby. On the other hand, it makes me appreciate every day I get. Wow, this is starting to sound like a bad episode of The Hills. I've gotta go.
