Hacking Your Car

I've never been a fan of OnStar. Sure, it's a great thing to have if you're in a car accident or you lock your keys out or you just need someone to talk to because you're lonely. The thing that most people don't realize is that OnStar is simply a data modem that's been granted access to your car's computer. Sure, that shouldn't be a bad thing but these days there are ways to hack cell phones and just about anything else with a microchip.

According to an article at Gizmodo, some researchers at the University of Washington and USCD were able to plug into a car's computer and do about everything from causing the horn to honk to shutting off the engine and locking the doors. Since OnStar is a computer interface on a data network and it has an IP address, it's only a matter of time before someone finds how to gain access, hack and remotely slow down your car... you know, just like Big Brother OnStar can do if your car gets "stolen." Don't worry, you can't just request this, it has to come from a third party (police agency). I guess this is just another reason to get out our tin foil hats. Matter of fact, you better head down to Costco and buy a jumbo roll so you can make one for your Chevy too.
